About the Author
Roy Bhaskar is the originator of the philosophy of critical realism, and the author of many acclaimed and influential works including A Realist Theory of Science, The Possibility of Naturalism, Scientific Realism and Human Emancipation, Reclaiming Reality and Dialectic: The Pulse of Freedom. He is an editor of the recently published Critical Realism: Essential Readings and is currently chair of the Centre for Critical Realism.

I have always enjoyed the opportunity to see reality through lenses that give us the greatest chance for clarity. Empiricism has always seemed too restrictive. Critical realism provides this opportunity. I have read other works by Roy Bhaskar and have found his thoughts lucid. However, I found this particular book hard to follow simply because of my lack of exposure to the subject of Marxist philosophy, which seems to be the thrust of this book. Critical Realism deals with the realm of understanding society at large with significant spill over in to the sciences. It is applicable to all human endeavors. Its ultimate goal is human emancipation. Critical Realism embraces a coherent account of the nature of nature, society, science, human agency and philosophy. I think I will be re-reading this in the future at some point, but the majority of the discussion herein was above my current understanding.
