The Mariner's Chronometer

The Mariner's Chronometer is perhaps the best book on the subject currently available for the amateur. The explanations are clear; the English plain and to the point; key concepts properly illustrated. The book is up to date with a useful select bibliography. There is a fine summary on the chronometer's general development written from an engineering perspective which balances recent popular accounts. Mr Morris stands in the tradition of the great gentleman amateur Rupert T Gould and whilst respectful of professional horology is not in awe of it. He is not afraid to explain clearly to the reader how to open and repair these marvelous machines and he is obviously up to the task with rates of a second a day (ours is gaining five). My hope is that Mr Morris will go on and update Gould with the definitive study of the subject for the early 21C.

Excellent practical manual

A couple of other reviewers were doubtful that this book is sufficient help for the inexperienced in clock repair to service a chronometer. However, I bought a Russian chronometer that suffered badly in the post and had no other option than attempt repairs myself - so with book in hand I dismantled, cleaned and reassembled the chronometer, which is currently ticking on my bench. You will have to modify screwdrivers, and buy tools for pulling hands and gears. There are some tricky points - I had trouble pulling the cannon pinion, and replacing the detent was a bit nerve-wracking. There is one minor omission in the reassembly instructions and sometimes I wished for an extra picture - nonetheless, I'd never serviced a clock before and I now have a working chronometer, so the book delivers on its promise

The book gives a very clear account of the structure of the marine chronometer and the overhaul chapters are especially good. I don't know of any other book that gives so much detail. They should be valuable not only to the enthusiastic amateur but also to the non-specialized professional.
But I would take with a pinch of salt the author's implication that anyone "who is not all thumbs" could attempt overhaul. It would be better to get in some practice first. The history chapter interestingly looks at the chronometer as an evolving instrument, rather than giving a social history, and balances some of the British hype about Harrison by giving a lot of detail from French sources.
The original diagrams are very clear, so are the many color photos, with the exception of a slightly fuzzy one on page 23. There is a drafting error in figure 2.1 of my copy which misplaces the second hand, but its correct position is given on the following page.
Overall a very useful contribution to the literature on chronometers, but chronometer professionals I think will hate it, since it dispels much of the mystique that surrounds the instrument.
