What Richard Feynman described as “the central mystery” of quantum physics is encapsulated in the experiment with two holes, also known as the double-slit experiment. In this experiment, a particle going through one of a pair of holes seems to be aware of what is going on at the other hole, and changes its behaviour according to whether that hole is open or closed. This is closely linked to the puzzle of entanglement, where one particle instantly reacts to what is happening to another particle, even when they are widely separated. And in a final example of the mind-boggling nature of the quantum world, these effects seem to operate across time as well as space: What is going to happen in the future affects the behaviour of a particle now.
In The Quantum Mystery, John Gribbin, the best-selling author of In Search of Schrdinger’s Cat, describes the history of the double-slit experiment, the wave-particle duality of the quantum world, and the latest experiments which show these bizarre effects at work before our very eyes.

Waves or particles?
By J. Chambers
I'll say this for author John Gribbin - he's an excellent science writer with a way of explaining very complex ideas that interested readers can at least begin to wrap their minds around. In an earlier book (Before the Big Bang), he did a splendid job of explaining what happened during the first split-second in the life of the universe. He's done the same thing with The Quantum Mystery, which explains the science behind the double-slit experiment (also known as the "experiment with two holes") of Englishman Thomas Young in 1801. Young had previously done experiments involving sound waves and had noted how these waves could interfere with one another. Believing that light traveled as waves, Young expected light waves would exhibit the same sort of interference effects. Young then adapted his sound experiment to study light, which has become known as the double-slit experiment. In the experiment, a light wave is split into two separate waves that later combine into a single wave. Changes in the path lengths of both waves result in a phase shift, creating interference patterns.
Gribbin devotes a considerable portion of the book to providing the historical background of scientific discoveries both leading up to the double-slit experiment as well as subsequent developments like subatomic physics and the photoelectric effect. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the stage was set for the development of quantum physics. A key element in the development of quantum theory was discovering the electromagnetic wave-particle relationship (also known as wave-particle duality). Then entered Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrdinger to bring the various theoretical ideas and experimental observations together into a satisfactory theory of quantum mechanics that incorporated probabilistic rules. Most interesting to me - a layman - is that a number of different interpretations of quantum mechanics have been proposed and correctly used to predict the outcomes of experiments. The author favors the Many Worlds Interpretation ("parallel universes"), while the so-called Copenhagen Interpretation is preferred by many physicists.
Quantum theory actually makes no sense to anyone, even theoretical physicists who routinely think about matters that would scramble most people's minds. But John Gribbin has managed to write about the subject in a way that makes it interesting to science-minded folks. Kudos to him for that difficult task.

This book delivers everything it promises and more!
By Cemil Sinasi Turun
Dear reader, I am a layman with a fair background of physics and general science education. I have been reading on Quantum Theory intensively for the last few months, that I have found this book. The author is famous with two good books on quantum theory and its implications, and this kindle single is a short essay on the main problem of wave/particle duality. I love kindle singles because every page turn gives a 1% progress of the book and hence joy!
This book is an excellent example of tackling a basic problem and giving the reader every single valuable information available in the science literature. What makes this book a 5 star, is Gribbin's laying the wave/particle duality problem from the beginning till the very end (from Young's 1801 double slit experiment to the 2013 single electron double-slit diffraction experiment of the Batelaan team) with many valuable details. For example, I am thankful for the information on the development of the cathode ray tube (and the vacuum tube) and its impact on many important 19th century experiments. This is a hard to find detail and this book is the first time I found any information on the details of the experiments made by Lenard, an obscure yet key scientist who received the 1905 Nobel prize for his work on cathode rays.
Bottom line: The central mystery of the quantum theory is well documented and thoroughly discussed here in this little volume. There is yet no solution, of course, to the mystery question. But this is not John Gribbin's fault!

This essay is so good that it should be turned into a short book ...
By George O Gardner PhD
The “Quantum Mystery” is a clear well-written description of the peculiar behavior of subatomic particles. It shows how the behavior of subatomic particles is very different from the behavior of ordinary objects. It does this by describing the results of variants of the double slit experiment. These are experiments that are simple to explain and understand. The results show the bizarre behavior of subatomic particles. This essay is so good that it should be turned into a short book by adding a chapter on “spooky action-at-a-distance” and by adding chapter titles, references, some suggestions for additional reading, and an index. I would have it on my book shelf in an instant.
